Public Health and Education

The public health & education team addresses the social determinants of epilepsy, such as isolation, discrimination, food insecurity, police interactions, and more. This is achieved through collaborative activities including mini-grants, conferences, outreach, partnerships, and more.

Through the Multicultural Outreach & Health Equity Program and the Public Health Institute, we build up our network, community, and partners to address the unmet social needs of people with seizures.
The public health & education team also works with the advocacy and training teams to help accomplish our goals.

The Multicultural Outreach Program is focused on raising awareness about epilepsy in marginalized and underserved communities. For years, the Foundation has partnered with the CDC to create and implement educational programs that address epilepsy-related disparities among racial and ethnic groups, underserved populations, rural, and neglected communities.

We launched a mini-grant initiative that awards $10,000 to 10 organizations each year to increase the connection of people with epilepsy to social services. Since its launch, over half a million dollars has been awarded to increase awareness, knowledge, and connection to epilepsy and social services.

The Epilepsy Foundation was awarded a planning grant for developing a health disparity research agenda, part of the National Institutes of Health’s Community-Engaged Health Equity Research in Neuroscience Initiative, or HERN. Our HERN project "Epilepsy Health Disparities Research through Community Co-Production" focuses on understanding the local drivers of epilepsy disparities for Black and African American people with epilepsy in the greater Philadelphia area. The goal is to expand to other areas by working within the Foundation’s Epilepsy Learning Healthcare System (ELHS).
