Seizures in Pets

My vet suggested that my 11 year old dog is exhibiting seizure like activity. Although he has not had a full blown gran mal seizure, he does exhibit some jerking, occassionally freezes in place, whines for no reason and sometimes his eyes roll back into his head. He is usually a little disoriented when these symptoms start and for a few hours afterwards, then he seems to want to sleep for long periods of time.Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there anything we can do for him? Do some vets specialize inthe treatment of animal epilepsy? Thanks!

I'm so sorry to hear of Shake's passing. I'm sure he will be missed. Every 'beastie' who comes into my life makes it better and I miss each and every one.. You do the best thing you can for them, and make the decisions they can't. And they love us-a love that doesn't ask for anything other than you.

Thanks for your note. Yes, animals tug at your hearts and because they do not judge you, or you them, it's a love that you can not get from anything else...unless you give them food they don't like!! I'm already on Petfinders to find another cat, as I'm ready to have another one around. My older cat may not appreciate it, but eventually she'll enjoy having company. Take care, Debi from Florida

Well, I did have a dog with epilepsy, and I don’t think it affected his life span. I suppose it depends on what is causing the seizures though. We didn't give him meds for his seizures because they weren't very frequent. So they tried phenobarbathal before doing the expensive tests ehh? I wish doctors would try that on me. Hey, you never know, maybe your cat is having psychogenic seizures? ;)
